Latin@ Deportations Post 9/11: A Case Study on Secure Communities Programs
|
The Case of Ruth Montano:Ruth Montano is a mother of two U.S. born children. She is facing deportation after her unjust arrest on New Year’s, due to a noise complaint in regards to her dogs. When Montano arrived home with her two children, she found six cop cars outside of her home. After an abusive incident with the police, Montano was arrested and held in detention for one week, longer than the legal limit in California. (Romero 2013) Ms. Montano is a victim of a program called “Secure Communities,” implemented after 9/11 to catch ‘terrorists’ and ‘criminals’. These programs have resulted in the deportation of innocent people.
